- The class will be asked what causes the phases of the moon and the answers will be written on the board. The class will then watch two video’s on YouTube called “What Causes the Phases of the Moon?” and “Phases of the Moon”
- Students will be given a journal where they will write three to five sentences daily about their descriptions of the moon throughout the course of twenty-nine days.
- Students will create a model of the Earth, sun and moon that will demonstrate the occurrence of the phases of the moon and eclipses. The model will reflect the actual motion and position of the Earth, sun and the moon during each phase or eclipse.
- Students will be paired in groups of three to perform an activity using a flashlight. One student will be the sun, one the Earth, and another the moon. The student playing the moon will slowly orbit the student playing Earth and students will be able to identify the phases that the moon travels through as it orbits the earth.
- Students will be paired in groups and play a game where they will able to match pictures of the phases of the moon to its position in orbit around the Earth. The group that finishes first will receive a prize.
- Students will work in pairs to create moon phases using Oreo cookies and properly labeling each phase.
- Students will partake in a field trip to liberty science center to view the exhibition on the solar system which includes moon phases and eclipses
